Long Marston (Shakespeare County Raceway)
Originally a World War II airfield, the Evesham Auto Club first held a quarter
mile sprint on the runways in 1959. It was later used for motorcycle racing,
the circuit using perimeter roads and runways forming the circuit, Rallycross,
Rally Sprints and Jalopy racing (on a grass oval). In 1973 the National Drag
Racing Club held its first event on a 1/4 mile drag, but the surface
deteriorated, and later in 1974 the Midland Drag Racing Association used
an 1/8 mile drag event. Drag racing continued, as did the occasional motorcycle race,
and in 1979 an agreement was made with the landowners to tarmac a 1/4 mile section
onr runway. The venue was later renameed Shakespeare County Raceway.
