Atlanta History
Founded in 1960 near Hampton, Georgia, Atlanta Motor Speedway was purchased in late 1990 by Bruton Smith. Immediate expansion and improvement programs were begun and continue today. With the ultimate goal of being the premier motorsports facility in America, many areas of expansion have been completed or are well under way. More than 37,000 permanent additional grandstand seats and 30 luxury VIP suites have been completed since 1990. Many highway access improvements and a modern electronic message center also have been added. A 2.5-mile road course was built in 1992 to further enhance the 1.522-mile oval track. Future plans include the addition of approximately 60,000 grandstand eats, 35 VIP suites, corporate hospitality entertainment areas, a modern new quad-oval front stretch and 1500 Tara Place, a luxurious
condominium complex that will overlook the speedway.
Over the winter of 2021/22, the track was reconfigured, with the surface being repaved, the banking
increased from 24 to 28 degrees, and the track width decreased from 55 feet to 40 in the corners.
